Patience (chapter 3)

Said, woman, take it slow
It'll work itself out fine
All we need is just a little patience
Said, sugar, make it slow
And we come together fine
All we need is just a little patience

His phone kept ringing in the other room.

- "Aren't you gonna answer it?"

- "No, it can wait."

- "But someone is very persistent, it could be important."

- "Where's the rush? If it's good news, it can wait. I'll always be glad to hear it. And if it's bad news, then it definitely can wait."

- "But I could be an emergency." - from the tone of her voice, he knew he's gonna have to answer it.

- "I'm flattered that you think someone would call me in an emergency." - he still tried to avoid it. With a kiss, of course. - "Anyway, I'm very comfy here."

'Here' was in her bed. With her hair on his chest and his hands playfully caressing her body, he really didn't want to get up and answer the phone.

- "Oh please, just answer it! It's driving me crazy!"

He looked at her with a big 'question mark face'.

- "I'm sorry. It's just that I cannot relax and enjoy this with that damn thing ringing over and over again. And I don't want to remember our first time like this."

- "No, I'm sorry. I should have turned it off. I just didn't think anyone would call at this time. I'll be right back."

He took his phone, looked at it and turned it off.

- "You're not gonna answer it?"

- "No, it's definitely not an emergency."

- "Is it her?

- "Yes." - his voice trembled a bit.

- "Why is she calling you at this time of night?"

- "It's really hard to tell at this point." - he tried to laugh it off.

- "I thought the past stayed in the past. Isn't that what you said?"

- "It is, she's just a friend now."

- "Then why aren't you answering the phone?"

- "Because I don't want to talk with my ex lover a couple of minutes after we made love. I hope you can get that? And, for that matter, I wouldn't answer if it was any other friend.

Look, I know that this is hard for you. We just met and you have no reason to trust me, I get that. But if you're willing to give it a try, I promise I will make it worthwhile. And look the other side. At least you don't have to worry that I'm hiding something. My life is literally an open book, in every sense of the word. You know exactly where I am emotionally, and who with."

- "Well, that is true. But...".

He took her hand and caressed her hair.

- "No, I get it. I know how hard this must be. And to tell you the truth, if it was the other way round, I'm not sure I could do it either. But as a poet, Izzy Stradlin, said 'You and I've got what it takes to make it'. Nothing felt so right for a long time..."

She kissed him passionately and he could feel the warmth of her tears on his cheek.

- "I know. I know all that. And I really like you too. That's what makes this so confusing. Half of my instincts are telling me to go for it, and the other half are shouting to run away fast and far. I wouldn't want to lose you, but I definitely don't want to lose myself to you.".

- "I wouldn't want neither of that either. Look, take your time to process it. I don't want to rush you into anything. And I don't want to rush into anything. We have all the time in the world. I'll still be here when you figure it out."

- "Thank you...".

- "You don't have to take me for that. You should never apologize for your feelings, nor thank someone for acknowledging them."

From the way she looked at him, he already knew that she already figured it out. She just wasn't aware of it yet. He saw that look just a couple of times before, but more than enough to know what it means.

- "We still have time tonight Mr. writer. I hope you're not planning to waste it all on words?"

- "Words are meaningless and forgettable..." - he whispered to her ear before he started kissing the back of her neck.

Said, sugar, take the time
'Cause the lights are shining bright
You and I've got what it takes
To make it, We won't fake it,
I'll never break it
'cause I can't take it
